Tetouan was made the capital of the Spanish protectorate in 1913. It still has a very Spanish feel and Spanish is still widely spoken.
Muslim and Jewish refugees settled here from Andalusia and Granada in the 15th and 16th century. They brought with them the skills that helped the town to prosper.
Tetouan lies in the shadows of the beautiful Riff Mountains.
